They were created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Between 1940 and 1958 they created 114 shorts for MGM and would go on to win seven Academy Awards for animated shorts.
Did you know that they originally had different names? Tom’s name was Jasper. While Jerry didn’t have a name, animators referred to him as Jinx. It wasn’t until later that Hanna-Barbera offered a $50 reward to studio employees to discover the best names.
People don’t appreciate the creative talent to make such an amazing cartoon. With only two characters, no talking, synchronized with classical music, and beautiful art, the slapstick humor is timeless. No matter how old I get, each episode makes me smile.
Since the original movie, there have been many spinoffs. Some of my favorites were directed by Chuck Jones. I love Looney Tunes and Scooby-Doo, but in my opinion, nothing beats Tom and Jerry.
